NOVELL INCLUDES NEW AND ENHANCED NETWARE CLIENTS FOR DOS/WINDOWS
AND OS/2 WITH NETWARE 4.0
NetWare Clients Provide Power of 4.0's New Services to Desktops
Washington, D.C.---March 10, 1993---Novell today announced that
new modular NetWare clients for DOS/Windows, and OS/2 will be
shipping with NetWare 4.0. (All are also available separately for
existing NetWare users.) NetWare 4.0, Novell's next generation
network operating system delivers advanced network services to global
enterprise networking customers. The new NetWare clients provide
faster performance and access to NetWare services including
NetWare 4.0's directory services, communication with the NetWare 4.0
SFT III server, auto-reconnect, international language support,
increased security and much more.
"The new NetWare clients provide customers with easy and uniform
access to the advanced network services of NetWare 4.0," said William
Donahoo, director of marketing, Novell's Desktop Systems Group. "The
new NetWare clients are also backwards compatible, allowing communication
with all NetWare servers, including NetWare 2.x, 3.x, 4.0, and in the
future the Personal NetWare family," he said.
Novell has re-architectured the NetWare client for DOS/Windows.
This new client consists of a Requester composed of a series of Virtual
Loadable Modules (VLMs). VLMs provide network client services such as
file and print redirection that the NETX shell used to provide, but in a
modular fashion allowing users more flexibility for configuring clients.
"By writing a VLM, NetWare developers inherit the services found
in the NetWare client and reduce the time and work formerly required for
this type of development, " Donahoo added. VLMs are essentially value-added
TSRs. The similarity between VLMs and TSRs makes implementation relatively
easy for developers.
Examples of new VLMs that can be built by third-party developers include,
but are not limited to, database client tools, network management agents,
clients for connectivity to IBM host environments, clients for asynchronous
communication and peer-to-peer services. Users then benefit from the Requester
architecture through more features that are well-integrated on the client.
From within Windows, NetWare users can perform network client
configurations (such as map drives, capture printers, log in, log out, send
messages and change passwords) using either Novell's new NetWare Tools for
Windows or Microsoft's Window's File Manager, Control Panel or Print Manager.
In all cases, users gain ease of use by Novell's support of simple drag and
drop functionality.
New Features of NetWare Clients for DOS/Windows, and OS/2
The new NetWare clients for DOS/Windows and OS/2 gives customers
the following added capabilities:
NetWare Directory Services--Supports a single view of the network and gives
customers seamless, global access to all company resources allowing them to
reduce administration costs and increase productivity
NetWare SFT III--NetWare client can communicate with the NetWare SFT III
server whose dual mirroring fault tolerance ensures data integrity for
enterprise networks
Auto-Reconnect--Reconnects all prior parameters when the server is
rebooted or power is regained
Windows Integration--Tighter integration enables users to easily access
NetWare utilities; users need never exit Windows to access network resources,
and the client can be loaded either before Windows loads or in a DOS box under
Windows
International Language Support--Allows access and management of the network
using native languages
Security--Provides users with increased protection against unauthorized
requests
Packet Burst and Large Internet Packet Services--Information can be burst in
larger packets across the network providing increased performance on wide area
networks
Unlimited Connections--Extends beyond original eight connection limit
for the client
Printer Ports--Access now possible to nine printer ports; up from the
three ports in earlier versions
Diagnostic Capabilities--Diagnostic information can be displayed by
Network Management software.
Pricing and Availability
The new NetWare clients for DOS, Windows and OS/2 will begin shipping
with NetWare 4.0 at the end of March. The clients will initially be available
in English with French, Italian, German, Japanese and Spanish version available shortly after the product
ships. The new NetWare clients will be available through Novell's sales
